The last Conference of the International Wine Law Association (IWLA) was held in Siena, Italy, from September 16 to September 18, 2016.

Founded in 1985, the aim of this international association is to provide an international forum for the studying and debating of wine law issues.

Currently it has more than 300 members coming from more than thirty countries. IWLA has the statuts of official observer at the OIV and WIPO.

The main topic of the last IWLA’s Congress relates to the legal tools for the protection of local wineries in a gobal market.

More than 150 people attended the Congress coming from different business sectors: directors of international organizations, arbitrators, lawyers, notaries, CEOs of national or regional wine federations (especially from France, Italy and California), wine law professors and students, etc.

Olivier Mandel was one of the speakers of the Conference.

His presentation was on the opportunities and challenges faced by foreign companies which invest in the wine sector in China. During his presentation, Olivier especially gave the audience an insight into the wineries’ acquisitions made in China by the luxury French companies Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) and Moët Hennessy.
